Hiring a Plumber

Whether you’re hiring a plumber to tighten up or unclog drains, or for help with a remodel, there are a few things you should know. In all cases, it is best to get to know and establish a working relationship with a trained, licensed plumber before you have a major emergency. What to look for when selecting your family plumber? Keep reading.

  1. A good plumber has credentials. This means they are licensed for your area, and have a good reputation for doing great work at a fair price. Your plumber should know exactly what kind of equipment is needed for a repair and be confident that he or she can do the job.
  2. A good plumber will give accurate quotes up front. Every plumber is going to quote a different price. These prices seem high, but often a plumber is at your home for a very short duration, and he or she is well-trained. Your plumber should provide accurate pricing before the job is done and have very good and well-documented reasons if the job costs more than expected.
  3. A good plumber has insurance. This means that if he or she sustains any kind of injury on the job, as a private contractor or an employee of a licensed company, the individual plumber or the company will be covering the cost of health care. Pay close attention to this, it can save you thousands of dollars.
  4. A good plumber has references. He or she can provide you with the names of people in your area that have used his or her services and been satisfied. If you have a friend who has a plumber that she really likes, call him up and get him working for you, also. Using your friend as a reference will help you establish a great working relationship with your plumber.  If your plumber is new to the area, he or she should be able to provide references from his or her old area of business, either through letters or by giving you the phone numbers of people you can call. Always check references.

Another great way to find a plumber is to talk to your real estate agent or your general contractor. Both of these people work in a profession that requires them to know reliable plumbers in their area.
