Energy efficiency windows are defined as windows that decrease the amount of warm or cool air leaving or entering the home. Windows are judged energy efficient when they have a low U factor, which is the factor for the amount of air that can penetrate the glass, and high R factors, the amount that the window is resistant to air flow. Energy efficiency windows also reduce condensation and penetration of solar UV rays. The level at which it does these things is the windows insulation value.

Single pane windows often have a high U factor and are poor insulation choices in extreme climates (very hot or very cold). Double pane windows reduce air flow and penetration and solar UV rays. Many manufacturers include new technologies that significantly reduce U factors called low E coatings. These coatings are available for single, double, triple and quadruple pane glass. Another technology being used is to fill the spaces between class on multi-paned widows with a more energy efficient gas than air. These are gases such as argon, krypton or carbon dioxide. Gas fills only cost a small amount more than air fills and are most effective when used in conjunction with low E coatings.

Along with the number of glass panes in a window, E coatings, and fills, the overall insulation value of a window depends on its frame and spacers. The frame is what holds the window together, a window spacer refers to the component in a window that separates glazing panes. Spacers notoriously reduce insulation at the windows edges, and certain frames can cause a window to be significantly less efficient. The best energy efficient windows make use of this knowledge by offering better insulating frames than the standard metal frames. Frames such as wood, fiberglass or vinyl, or composite frames which are made from a combination of these materials including metal reduce air leakage. Spacers can be aluminum, steel, foam, fiberglass or a combination of these materials. Metal, again, is the least efficient spacer choice.

The NFRC, or, national fenestration rating council is a nonprofit rating service developed in the U.S. and Canada to rate windows for energy efficiency. Its entire purpose is to present buyers and contractors with non-biased, standardized methods of comparing various types of windows for cost and energy efficiency. All labels will have a U factor, a measure of the rate of solar heat flow through the window, a measure of visible light penetration and an air leakage rating. The measure of solar heat flow through the window will be important for reducing cooling costs in hot climates, and heating costs in cool climates by using or blocking solar rays. Visible light penetration will effect energy efficiency by reducing UV rays.

Energy efficient skylights and doors are also now available and will be rated according NFRC specifications. Proper installation of energy efficient windows can save you money in cooling and heating costs and reduce your overall carbon footprint.

A remodeling general contractor is a person who agrees to a contract with an owner of a building. The contract makes the contractor responsible for overseeing all remodeling renovations and repairs. The remodeling general contractor then has to carry out all plans according to the contract, including agreed upon budget and design. The contractor also is responsible for supplying and installing the materials for the project.

Before a contract can be made up the owner and the remodeler will agree with the terms. A design and a budget will be agreed upon. If the owner is unsure what he or she wants, the remodeling general contractor will have many suggestions and a portfolio of previous designs to help the owner choose. The overall price the contractor gives after a design is agreed upon will include his or her salary, and the cost of supplies, materials and installation.

After the job is agreed upon and the remodeling general contractor has been contracted to the job, he or she will carry out all plans. The contractor will hire installation experts, purchase materials and remove old appliances, furniture, carpet, etc. To complete this task, the remodeling general contractor may have to hire subcontractors, or, people contracted to work for your contractor. These will be included in the original price. The work should stick closely with budget and design.

When hiring a remodeling general contractor, it is a good idea to look for one who is experienced in the specific area you want to remodel, and has a good reputation. A remodeling general contractor is able to get a job done efficiently based on his or her connections with installers and suppliers. These people will often do very good work for someone who constantly supplies them with business and who they consider a good partner. Your general contractor should also have specific credentials based on your state laws. Always bring up the matter of onsite injuries, should they occur. Find out what he or she has in place to make sure that you are not liable for injuries sustained on your property.

There are many websites that offer to help you find the right general contractor for your job, and many firms have online sites. As such, a remodeling general contractor should be very easy to find and hire. Be picky about price and references. Use friend recommendations whenever possible. It is also a good idea to have a general idea of what you want done before calling. Getting an estimate from a general contractor involves answering many questions. Because design styles and the costs of materials vary, it may be impossible to get an accurate estimate before a plan is determined and agreed upon. At very best, the contractor can tell you what sort of salary he or she usually asks for. For large or detailed remodeling projects, a general contractor can save you time and money, and help make sure the job is done right.

If you suspect you have mold in your house, you need to act immediately. Mold spreads quickly and can be extremely dangerous. It causes respiratory problems, sinus infections and can even be fatal. Some of the causes of mold in the home are: flooding from broken pipes or natural causes; sewage backup; bath, toilet, or sink overflow; leaky pipes or ceilings; high humidity from steam, dryers or humidifiers. Before mold can be eliminated, the moisture must be completely controlled.

Often, mold will be visible around windows or discolored walls. Sometimes, it is between walls and can only be smelt. Other times, it will be invisible and not detected by smell, and show up as respiratory symptoms and other health problems. Common symptoms include: wheezing, asthma, sinus congestion, hacking cough, head aches, mood swings, and body aches. If you suspect your health problems are due to mold, tell your doctor. If the mold in your home is causing health issues, it needs to be removed by a professional. Also, if the mold in your home has spread beyond twenty-five square feet of space, you will need a professional. Otherwise, here is what you can do to rid your home of mold:

Eliminate moisture: Dry out your home as much as possible. Remove and throw away moldy carpeting, furniture, or other items. Use fans and ventilation to remove water from the home. Get rid of ruined and wet walls, tiles, insulation and wood.

Gather supplies: To eliminate mold you will need the following items: rubber gloves, ventilator mask, buckets, pine oil based cleaner, bleach, a wet dry shop vacuum, sponges and rags.

Clean: Find a way to maximize ventilation in the area. Use the mask and rubber gloves. Vacuum out any moisture. Clean hard surfaces first with water and pine-oil solution, then with a ten percent bleach solution. Let the bleach sit on the surface for at least ten minutes, then rinse and dry thoroughly. Throw away porous materials.

To prevent mold in your home, here is what you can do: Stop leaks immediately inside the home, thoroughly dry any exposed components as soon as moisture is discovered and disinfect the area, try to keep the humidity in your home below forty percent, use water and mold resistant building materials, and routinely check potential problem areas.

Mold in the home is very common, but, can be controlled and prevented if caught quickly. If your home has been flooded or is experiencing a high amount of moisture, mold can grow in less than forty-eight hours. Once it sets in, it can grow very quickly, especially in porous materials. In most cases, carpets and furniture exposed to mold should be thrown away. Mold can live deep inside the fabric and fibers and keep coming back. Food that has been exposed, even if does not show immediate signs of mold, should also be thrown away. If you think mold is a potential danger for your home, be very vigilant and aggressively attack mold if it appears.

Renter’s insurance covers the renter’s possessions in case of fire or theft. Renter’s insurance does not cover damage to the specific house, because the landlord should have separate insurance that covers the property. Renter’s insurance also does not pay the money necessary to replace windows, walls or floors damaged by the renter. Renters insurance is relatively cheap, and several companies offer it. If you are thinking about getting renters insurance, buy a fire proof safe and take a detailed inventory of the items in your home, how much you paid for them, and how old they are. Next, save receipts for all items you buy after taking the inventory. Keep receipts and inventory lists in the fire proof safe, along with any cash or valuable jewelry inside the home.

Next, consider these factors when looking for a great renter’s insurance provider:

Full coverage: this means the insurance covers everything in your home, and accounts for sentimental value. In the case of a fire, you can lose everything. You want to make sure that the insurance will help you get your life back on track.

Deductible: The higher the deductible, the lower the overall cost of coverage. Make sure that the insurance is still going to provide you adequate financial support. Don’t take a one thousand dollar deductible on two thousand dollars worth of stuff.

ACV (actual cash value): This is the actual value of all the items in your home after considering the total price you paid minus any depreciation. That is why it is a great idea to write down how much you paid and when for each item in your house. Some insurance will cover only actual cash value.

Replacement costs: This is different from actual cash value. Instead of paying actual cash value, some insurance will pay you the estimated cost of replacing the item. Know what kind of coverage you have. Depending on the item, either ACV or replacement cost can be a better deal.

Other than just considering the items in your home, your renter’s insurance rates will depend on whether you have a security system, dead bolts and fire alarms in your home. Some renter’s insurance will not cover a home with a certain breed of dog in it. Floods, earthquakes and other natural disasters are often not covered by renter’s insurance.

Deciding if you need renters insurance will require a working knowledge of the items in your home and what they are worth. Consider this against the overall monthly premiums and the coverage being offered. Often, it is a great idea to, instead of paying insurance, save money yourself in case of an accident. Having an emergency fund is a great option because any type of emergency can be covered, and, in case of a natural disaster, you haven’t thrown your money away. Take a good look at your options before you decide, in some cases, based on the overall value of your possessions, renters insurance will be the better deal.

Loosely defined, Epoxy flooring is a type of flooring that uses a chemical polymer, or liquid chemical, and converts it to a solid with a resin. During the conversion process, the chemical becomes extremely adhesive. Because of this, Epoxy is also defined as an adhesion technique. For a floor, Epoxy is often poured directly onto a concrete floor base. The polymer is laid and the resin applied. Epoxy creates a durable, insulated floor, that is virtually limitless in color and design potential. It is popular in businesses, public buildings and recreation rooms because it is very easy to clean and extremely difficult to damage. It is often used to create an upbeat and contemporary setting. It can also be used in garages or other high traffic areas.

For the do-it-yourself consumer, epoxy floors come in two-part kits, and are sold mostly as protective coatings for the garage, or recreation room. These are commonly offered in grey or white. To customize your floor and get true color, it is best to go to your home building supplier and let him or her know exactly what you want to do with epoxy flooring and see what advice he or she has for you.

For those willing to hire in an epoxy flooring company or contractor, they are extremely easy to find. Hire a licensed professional with his or her own insurance, and one who can offer you a maximum of color and design choices. Part of the fun of epoxy flooring is customizing.

Once in, Epoxy flooring is very easy to clean. For the garage floor, never use paint thinner or other harsh chemicals. Since epoxy is nonporous, all oil, dirt and debris will be on the surface, and, if rinsed right away, will be easy to remove. Soak up chemical spills with a towel, and spray down the floor with a hose. For a more thorough cleaning, or for a custom floor, use these steps.

Remove dirt and debris with a broom or a bare floor vacuum. Use warm water and a little bit of detergent to mop the floor. Rinse the mop and water, and then go back over the floor to remove excess soap. Dry the floor with a large, soft towel. Buff and shine with a separate, soft towel or a floor buffer.

Epoxy floors are durable, great insulators and easy to clean. This makes them a great flooring choice for a variety of areas. Since they are highly customizable, they have something to offer to every taste and style. Do-it-yourself epoxy floor kits are mostly available as protective coatings for the garage floor, but, it may be possible to customize without a professional. For decorative or artistic epoxy floors, there are several companies and individuals offering beautiful, colorful, custom designs. The right professional will have credentials, be self-insured and offer a large, almost limitless, variety of designs and colors. A properly maintained epoxy floor will last a very long time.

What is a memory foam mattress? A memory foam mattress is a mattress made with a certain amount of “memory foam” or special foam that responds, or contours, according to the amount of pressure in a certain area. While most mattresses sink in according to weight, memory foam is special because it supplies adequate support for adequate pressure or weight of limbs, maintaining its firmness in areas where pressure is lighter. This means that when laying on a memory foam mattress, your hips and shoulders, where weight is increased will receive a greater response and cushion from memory foam, than your knees. This evens the pressure all throughout your body, providing relief for the back, neck, hips and shoulders.

A variety of companies sell memory foam mattresses and mattress toppers. Some companies claim to have green or organic memory foam; however, for memory foam to work it cannot be natural. Memory foam was originally invented by NASA scientists to help reduce g-force felt from going incredibly high speeds. It is made from a synthetic polyurethane material with chemicals added to increase density. This is the only way to create memory foam. The final product is said to be nontoxic.

When looking for a quality mattress, here are some questions to ask:

Weight. A good weight will be 4 to 5 pound density. The higher the weight, the more viscoelastic (responsive to movement and pressure) the memory foam will be.

ILD: This is a rating corresponding to how many pounds of pressure are required to indent the foam twenty-five percent. The higher the ILD, the firmer the foam. Choose an ILD rating that fits the approximate weight of the persons that will be sleeping on it.

Resilience: This refers to the springiness of the foam. You always want a foam with high resilience, to ensure durability and comfort.

Memory foam mattresses can be very expensive. Cheaper varieties are often composed of foam that is not the original memory foam and simply imitates it. For those who already have a reasonably nice mattress, a memory foam mattress topper may be a great option. They are much less expensive and can be bought to fit any mattress. A mattress topper should be evaluated for softness, density and thickness. A less thick mattress topper can be a great choice as long as it is not too soft, and dense enough to supply pressure relief and avoid sagging or squishing down too much.

Memory foam is very popular and heavily sought after. As a result, the consumer has many choices. It is a good idea to be suspicious of cheap “memory foam” or “green memory foam” since the process of making memory foam is usually the same and varies only in the amount of chemicals used. Green memory foam is nonexistent, and amounts to nothing but a marketing ploy. Being a well-informed consumer can help you make a good decision.

It is possible to attain medication for your pet without going to a veterinarian; however, very few Veterinarians recommend doing so. Many medications are strong, and specific to certain ailments that must be diagnosed by a trained professional. If you are not absolutely certain that you know what is going on with your pet, going to a veterinarian for diagnosis is worth the expense.

For common or minor ailments, it will save time and money if you buy medication online or at a pet store. Here is a list of common symptoms effecting dogs and cats, and medications to treat them:

Ear mites: Not all cases of itchy ears are from ear mites. It is normal for cats and dogs to scratch their ears and to like them rubbed. When ear mites are present, you may notice a large increase in the amount of scratching, and furious head shaking. There will also be a lining of brown, crusty ear wax. White dots present in the brown crust are the ear mites themselves. To rid your pet of ear mites, his ears and coat must be treated with an ear mite pesticide. When looking for a treatment, find one that treats the entire animal. Wash all the animal’s bedding, and its collar in very hot water. Any blankets or other furniture should also be treated. Including the carpet. Some ear problems can mimic mites, such as fungus or yeast infections inside the ear. If problems persist beyond initial treatment, you must see a vet.

Fleas and ticks can be treated in much the same way, or, by using a regularly applied pesticide, for sale at most pet stores and online. Use mite treatment for mites, and flea and tick treatment for fleas and ticks.

Wounds: A wound on a cat or dog can be a serious problem if left untreated. Many pet owners choose to let the animal take care of its own wounds; however, if the wound is the result of a bite from another animal, or caused by something rusty or infected, this is very dangerous. Animals can reinfect their own wounds and cause infections to multiply by spreading the bacteria from their mouths into the wound. This can cause it to fester with infection. If your cat or dog is wounded stop them from licking and fussing with the area. For very deep or wide, gaping wounds, always see a vet. For surface, or less serious wounds, treating with peroxide, warm water and gentle soap will remove much of the infection. The area should also be drained, if possible, by gently pressing with a warm cloth and wiping away the infected yellow and white puss. Then wash thoroughly. If the wound cannot be drained because of its location and does not heal on its own after this treatment, you will need a prescription strength antibiotic from a professional.

Getting medication for common problems or less serious ailments can save money. When the problem requires more specific diagnosis or professional advice, be certain to seek it. Pets are valuable and sweet companions and deserve proper treatment.

For homeowners or builders looking to insulate a new home or replace old insulation the options can be a bit mind-boggling. Here is an over view of major insulation types and categories, including green options, to aid you in further research.

Before we get into types, you should know what an R value is. R value is the value used to measure the exact amount of resistance to heat flow a certain type of insulation provides. Resistance to heat flow works both by keeping hot air from entering from outside, and hot air from flowing. Higher R values equal more effective insulation types.

Fiberglass: Although fiber glass is a known skin and lung irritant, most consumers are very familiar with it as an insulation type. It is effective, and easy to install in batt (long, handleable sheet) form, as long as there is plenty of space for it between the walls. Squeezing or squishing fiberglass decreases its effectiveness. R value is about 3 to 4 per inch.

Mineral Wool: Also called rock wool, this type of insulation is more expensive than fiber glass and just as effective. Mineral wool is also a great sound proofer. It is sold, like fiber glass, to the general public in batt form. R value is about 3 to 4 per inch.

Polystyrene Boards: These are boards that can be used with batt insulation to increase insulation effectiveness, or attached to the outside of a home under siding to further insulate under-insulated walls. In home fires, this type of insulation produces highly toxic smoke. R value is 4 to 5 per inch.

Polyurethane Foam: This type of insulation can only be installed by a trained professional. It is sprayed directly into walls, corners, attic floors and under roof sheathing to create a seamless air barrier. In vegetable oil based form, this is a green insulation. R value is 4 to 4.5 per inch.

Loose fill: This type of home insulation requires a professional to come to your home and blow loose fiberglass, mineral wool or fiberglass directly into your walls. This can be a good option for insulating uninsulated walls that are already built. The loose fill can settle over time, however, and how to prevent settling should be the number one question you ask a professional if considering this option. R value is 3 to 4 per inch.

Green Insulation: Insulation made from recycled cotton is durable, effective and fully recyclable. It is also relatively inexpensive. The manufacturing process for cotton insulation requires less energy than fiber glass. R value for recycled cotton is 3 to 4 per inch. Another great, natural option is vegetable oil based polyurethane foam or blown in cellulose. Cellulose is natural, and nontoxic, but can settle, loosing effectiveness. The R values of these range from 3 to 5 per inch.

When choosing a home insulation, It is important to consider your homes overall construction and insulation needs. Properly installed insulation can save much in energy costs over time.

Although several different types of siding exist, vinyl siding easily mimics more expensive options and is one of the most popular types of home siding available today. Every home builder must eventually choose what siding best suits his or her particular home and his or her overall goals for that home.

In this article you can read about some of the major reasons some choose vinyl siding over other types of siding, and get information about factors that should be considered before deciding to proceed with vinyl siding on your home.

Positives:

Vinyl siding is durable. It lasts a very long time with very little work. As such, it is touted by advertisers as a great, long lasting, and relatively inexpensive (vinyl siding varies greatly in price) for home builders. Often, landowners who want to fix or build a home to rent, find vinyl appealing because it promises a long life and less out of pocket down the road. It doesn’t rot, chip or peel, and individual panels can be replaced easily. Homeowners undergoing the expense and inconvenience of replacing the current siding on their homes may find the promise of durability especially appealing.

Vinyl siding is easy to clean and maintain. Dirt and debris slide off of vinyl siding easily. It can be hosed down to keep its clean, fresh appearance and shine for many years. There is no need for shining, staining, or repainting.

Vinyl siding comes in a variety of colors and finishes. With the large assortment of siding to choose from, your color choice is virtually limitless. It can mimic rock or wood. The color is baked through to limit fading and eliminate scratches, keeping siding looking great for years to come.

Negatives:

Vinyl siding will never drive up the value of a home the way wood or stone will. Many home buyers have come to expect vinyl siding, or not know the difference, but they will never prefer it over more organic siding choices.

Health concerns. Although the producers of vinyl siding largely and loudly refute them, allegations that vinyl manufacturing processes cause cancer and other health concerns add to the controversy over vinyl siding. When vinyl siding burns it releases chemical toxins, and, if discarded, does not break down the way natural products do.

When choosing vinyl siding these issues should be further considered and researched. Both proponents and opponents of vinyl siding claim to have scientific and medical research on their side, lending credibility to their positions. For those whose major concern is the environment, many green options exist for siding. For those whose primary concern is cost, color-choice, profit, and durability, vinyl siding might be the correct option.

Other available siding choices include: wood, stone veneer, brick, and stucco, each with their own sets of pros and cons. Every home must have siding, the decision to go with any particular siding should depend largely on the homeowners overall priorities, goals and personal taste. As always, budget will be a factor, also.

An air mattress is an inflatable object, made mostly of vinyl that is meant to serve as a temporary or portable sleeping arrangement. Air mattresses come in a variety of sizes, from child to King size, and offer an array of features. They typically require a pump for inflation, although some are self-inflating. The most common type are meant to sit on the floor, or on an air mattress frame, but there are also some known as “raised bed” air mattresses. The main things to consider when buying an air mattress is portability, durability and comfort.

Self-inflating: Self-inflating air mattresses are extremely convenient and inflate themselves fairly quickly, but can be expensive. They come in as many sizes and types as any other air mattress.

Raised bed: A raised bed, or mid-rise air mattress inflates so that the sleeper is off the floor by about twice as much as on a normal air mattress. These mattresses are bulky, but comfortable, and may be worth it for some.

Portability: A highly portable air mattress inflates and deflates quickly, fits the person or persons intending to sleep on it, is relatively light, and folds up small. Depending on your desired use, portability may not be your main concern. The downsides of a light, portable mattress can be durability and comfort. A lighter mattress may be thinner, and will not be as comfortable.

Durability: This will vary considerably from mattress to mattress. Often, because of the strength of the material involved in construction, a raised bed air mattress will be more durable, but this is not always the case. If you buy an air mattress for camping, hiking or floating the river (not a recommended use or an approved practice by most safety officials), make sure you buy one intended for outdoor use. Not all air mattresses are made the same, if you do some research, the choice between portability and durability will not involve a ton of sacrifice.

Comfort: Any air mattress should inflate to a point that supports the sleeper entirely. As such, a certain level of comfort is expected of even the cheapest air mattress. If comfort is your primary concern, the most expensive models of mid-rise (raised bed) air mattresses are your best bet. The key to being comfortable on an air mattress is inflating it appropriately and making sure your air mattress is large enough to accommodate the full weight and mass of you and your sleeping partner.

Air mattress frames: These are usually portable, folding frames that are made to support an air mattress and up to a certain additional weight as specified on the package. These are not necessary for mid-rise air mattresses, but can add to the comfort of normal air mattresses by getting the sleeper off of the floor.

Air mattresses come in all prices, sizes and levels of comfort. Those looking for an air mattress must simply decide which features are most important to them.
