A Fountain in your Home

Installing a fountain in your home can be very easy and is an amazing way to make your home a more tranquil, calming environment. You have two major choices when installing an indoor fountain. You can either buy a small kit fountain that requires a minimal amount of assembly, or, you can choose to buy the major components and build your own fountain. Choosing to build your own fountain means a little more work, but can be very satisfying.

If you buy a ready-made fountain kit, keep in mind where in your home you would like to place it. For instance, buying a wall mounting fountain to hang on a wall without a nearby outlet may take away from the overall appeal of the water feature. You’ll find you need to run an ugly cord down the wall.

Ready-made kits come in a variety of pleasant and beautiful designs. Pick one that matches the decor and overall feel of your home.

If you choose to build your own fountain there are three things you must have. No matter how large or how small, or what shape or size your fountain is, every fountain needs a reservoir. This is where water can be collected and recycled. Every fountain also needs a pump, to circulate the water, and a fountain piece, from which the water can fall back into the reservoir.

Choosing a reservoir is relatively simple if you know where you ultimately want your fountain to stand and how large you want it. You can choose from tile, stone, metal, or wood basins. This is a perfect chance to use an antique pan or a beautiful ceramic bowl.

Choosing a pump can be trickier; you must find one that is the right size for the project you are working on and is durable and easy to clean. Solar powered pumps are becoming more common and may be a good option if your fountain will be in a place where there is plenty of access to sunlight. You should also purchase a pump with a good, easy to clean filter.

A fountain piece is the apparent place that the water comes from and disguises the real source of the water: the pump and reservoir. Choose a creative piece. Here are a few ideas: a cylinder fashioned from bamboo or a copper pipe; an old watering can; a clay jar.

Once you have all your pieces in place, you can hook your pump to your fountain piece using some extension vinyl tubing. Choose an appropriate diameter based on how much water you will be moving through your pump. Fill your reservoir with water, turn on the pump, and enjoy your beautiful, custom made fountain.

Whether you pick a fountain kit that is right for you, or choose to build your own fountain, you have made a choice you can easily enjoy.
